Essen/Marl, Germany. At the Mido Eyewear Show in Milan from April 30 to May 2, Evonik will present its high-quality sustainable eyewear material TROGAMID® eCO to a wider audience. In the production of the high-performance polyamide, 40 percent of the petrochemical raw material in the value chain is replaced by biomass and only renewable energy is used, reducing its carbon footprint by 50 percent.
No change for the customer
The eCO designation for products stands for Evonik's goal of avoiding the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide by using renewable or circular raw materials via the mass balance approach. This method enables immediate CO2 reduction in existing plants and does not change the quality of the products in any way nor are any new approvals required. As a result, TROGAMID® eCO products can be used unchanged for high-quality lenses for sunglasses, sports glasses, and eyeglass frames, just like their purely petrochemical-based counterparts TROGAMID® myCX and TROGAMID® CX7323. The Safilo company has already introduced TROGAMID® myCX eCO in the licensed market for premium lenses for sunglasses.
Mass balance approach
In mass balance, fossil and renewable or circular raw materials are mixed in existing systems and production processes. The proportion of renewable raw materials is mathematically assigned to specific products, which a neutral body checks across all production stages and certifies.
Mass balance is a way to track renewable or circular feedstock quantities throughout the process and allocate them to specific products. It enables production in existing large-scale plants with proven quality, making it a fast, cost-effective solution to meet environmental and sustainability goals.
